When people leave prison, they are given $200 and are taken to the nearest Greyhound or Amtrak station. They are not provided directions by CDCR, and over 90% are not picked up by a friend of family member. Many individuals leave after decades of incarceration, and return to a new world. We have produced guides for using public transportation from all of California’s prisons to its major metropolitan areas: Bay Area, Sacramento, Bakersfield, Los Angeles, and San Diego. They explain how to purchase tickets at an automatic teller, list emergency shelters along the way, and provide encouragement to the 40,000 people leaving California's prisons each year.
